Mother of the Groom Dresses
Your son’s happy day is approaching fast and it seems there’s not enough time to get everything done, let alone worry about what you as the Mother of the Groom are going to wear on the big day! Have no fear as the options available to you are almost endless. But what is expected from the groom’s mother? Can you not simply just buy and wear whatev
er outfit you please?
The answer is no. Of course you will want to find something that will leave you feeling both comfortable and beautiful for this special occasion, but there are a few basic rules of etiquette to be followed when the mother of the groom chooses her dress.
Firstly, not all mothers will even choose to wear a dress. The style and level of extravagance you choose for this occasion will largely depend on what the mother of the bride is wearing. Yes, she ultimately is expected to choose her dress first, and the m
other of the groom then follows suit and chooses according to the color and style chosen by the bride’s mother.
Of course this does not mean that you two are meant to be dressed like twins on this occasion! However, a similar color and style will compliment each other and look great in family and group photos. If the bride’s mother is keeping it simple, then you should also follow suit, with a simple dress or even a well tailored pant suit. If she chooses a full out ball gown, then you would want to dress to a similar accord so as not to clash or stand out as underdressed.
As far as choosing the color of your dress, the mother of the groom shouldn’t be dressed in the same color a
s the bridesmaids. Naturally you will want to choose a color that does not clash with the bridal party or the theme colors of the wedding. Its best for you to choose one of the wedding theme’s alternate colors, but never white, off white or ivory!
Also, don’t forget that many formal gowns and dresses without ‘wedding’ in the label are just as beautiful and elegant but at a much lower price, so don’t limit yourself to bri
dal themed shops or boutiques selling ‘wedding wear’. Similar if not better dresses for the mother of the groom can be found in many dress shops that sell formal or evening wear.
So whether you’re having a traditional wedding or watching your son exchange vows on the beach at sunset, take the time to find a dress that will compliment you and the photos, and that you can
look back with fond memories for years to come!
